Post Op Instructions

In the event that you require a surgical procedure, please follow the instructions below. If you feel as though your recovery is not progressing normally, please call our office.

Scaling and Root Planning

It is likely that your gums will be sore or irritated for a few days following a scaling and root planning procedure. We recommend that you follow the following instruction:

  • To relieve pain and keep the area clean, rise your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of water) 2-3 times each day
  • Continue brushing and flossing as normal after the procedure, but take care to brush gently to avoid additional irritation
  • Use a cold compress to relieve any swelling or stiffness
  • Do not eat chewy or hard foods for 2-3 days
  • If you have swelling or pain after a few days, please contact our office.

Veneers

You will receive a temporary restoration while we are building your permanent veneer. While you have this temporary restoration, follow these instructions:

  • Take care when cleaning and eating as this veneer is not as sturdy as your permanent veneer will be
  • Brush gently
  • While flossing, do not pull up the tooth
  • Avoid chewy and sticky foods

You will likely encounter sensitivity and irritation while the using the temporary or after the permanent is affixed in your mouth. This is normal and will subside; you can use a warm salt water rinse to help with any discomfort, and Advil or Tylenol can be taken to help ease the pain.

It is normal for the veneer to feel strange at first. Take care when brushing or flossing, and pay extra attention to your gum line between your tooth and the veneer. If anything with your bite feels strange, contact your dentist.

Extractions

After an extraction, you will need to be driven home by a family member or friend, and you will need to rest. It is normal to experience bleeding at the extraction site, and gauze will aid in stopping the bleeding. To aid in recovery, follow these instructions:

  • Do not lie flat; keep your head at an angle, propped on a pillow
  • If needed, take your pain medication as directed by your doctor
  • Use a cleaning solution to keep the site clean (if provided by your doctor)
  • Use an ice pack as needed to help ease the pain
  • Stick to soft foods for several days after your surgery, such as pudding, mashed potatoes, ice cream, soup, gelatin, and yogurt
  • Do not drink through a straw
  • Do not smoke

If you experience prolonged bleeding, pain, or increased irritation, contact your dentist.
