Do You Have Sleep Apnea?
If you suffer from sleep apnea, you may need to undergo oral surgery to remove the throat tissue that blocks your upper air passages. In some cases, we recommend a procedure called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). In UPPP, we remove excess tissue from your throat and upper mouth.
Other Treatment Options
Another option is a maxillomandibular advancement, where we move your jaw forward, away from the rest of the facial bones. This movement creates more room behind your mouth’s soft palate and reduces the obstruction that causes sleep apnea.
Lastly, if all other treatments have failed, we could perform a tracheostomy. In this procedure, a surgeon would insert a tube in your throat to allow you to breathe better. This tube would be covered during the day but is then open at night while you sleep.
